What I Love about My Dog

I never wanted a dog. I was so afraid of them that my hands would tremble and my heart would pound out of my chest, even at the sight of a five-pound Yorkie. (You can read more about my fear of dogs here). “If it is going to bite me, I don’t want to know about it,” I would think, as I close my eyes and enter a fetal position. The fear was most certainly real. Then, I met my husband. He made it very clear he wanted a wife, a truck, a house, and a dog. Fast forward almost 3 long years later, my dog, Bailey, is sleeping soundly on my feet as I type this blog post. I love her. She is my best friend and the reason I get out of bed every day (hello 7 AM wee wee time).

Have you ever considered a canine companion? I was afraid of dogs and now I don’t know what I would do without Bailey. Why? Continue reading…

Bailey

My dog, Bailey

She is always happy.

I can come home from the crappiest day at work and she greets me with her tail wagging and butt wiggling. The stresses of my day suddenly disappear when I see her excitement to have me home.

She keeps me healthy.

Every morning, Bailey sits on my feet as I drink my coffee. She paws and nudges my legs then runs to the door then runs back to me and sighs. She wants her morning walk. I wake up an hour earlier to take her on a thirty-minute walk before work. I leave my phone at home, and take the time to enjoy the outdoors with Bailey.

Adventure with my Dog

She practices non-judgment.

Do you really think she cares what I look like as parade down the street for our daily walk in my fleecy pajamas and sorority letter sweatshirt from almost ten years ago? And newsflash, that coffee mug I’m carrying, doesn’t have coffee in it. Bailey gives zero cares, and quite frankly, so do I.

She is my sidekick.

I must admit, I am super happy she doesn’t follow my husband. For a man who wanted a dog, he got a part-time friend. She is my sidekick and follows me wherever I go.  I love having my trusty companion with me and know that I am loved.

Bailey

Bailey loves to hydrate

She is a fierce protector.

It isn’t easy being a law enforcement officer’s wife. You spend a lot of time alone. I like being alone, but when you are alone and awakened at two o’clock in the morning, you are happy when your dog starts barking, alerting whomever it is, that she is present. I truly believe dogs have a sixth sense and will protect his or her owner.

She reads me like a book.

If I am happy, she is happy. She wags her tail and paws at me. If I am sad, she licks my tears away. If I am angry, she retreats to her dog bed, lies down, and looks at me, as if to say, “Are you done yet, Mom? Life is too short.” Whatever my emotion, she reads me and finds the perfect way to respond to my every need.

Dogs Just Want to Have Fun

She is fun.

Let’s rip open a new toy! Let’s go for a hike! Let’s play fetch! She is ready for anything at any time. She can’t contain her excitement for adventure, and neither can I. We have fun together. She teaches me to never pass up a fun, or new opportunity.

Final Thoughts

I love my dog. Bailey is truly my best friend.

I don’t know what I would do without her by my side.

Namaste.

  1. I rescued a puppy about a year ago and though she is frightened of most people and tends to lash out, to me she is the sweetest girl in the world. She gives the best puppy hugs, and can be so silly. My boyfriends dog is an oblivious ol’ hound dog without a care in the world, but he’s a great snuggler, especially during winter. Dogs are awesome!

    • If you can find a patient person who is calm and willing to work with you, you can definitely work on your rescue’s fear of people! It is great that you rescued her, but it would be amazing if you could also give her a happy life without fear! I will definitely try to write a post on my blog to help with that issue!

      • The issue I run into there is that people are only willing to provide such a service for a fee. In my area, the cheapest trainer for high anxiety/aggressive dogs is a couple thousand dollars; money I don’t have. 😦

      • I was in the same predicament! It took a LOT of patience and reading, but a lot of the behavioral issues with my dog (also a rescue) have been overcome. If you’d like, I could make a blog post about different strategies people could try on their own! 🙂

      • I could also perhaps, if you tell me more about when your dog becomes aggressive (what point, etc.), I could try to give suggestions! Note that I am not a trainer, I just read a lot so definitely no charge!

      • I don’t want to go into details on someone else’s post. If you make a post with tips, I’ll be sure to check it out. Thanks! 🙂

  2. Love this post! This is the reason why I made my blog – to show people how dogs can be used to heal us, and make us better people – hence, The Pack Heals. Inspired by my rescue, Pierre, of course! I love how a dog, that you were scared of, could make you feel better and improve your life positively!

  3. I love this post! I was too was terrified of dogs due to a Rottweiler biting me in the face when I was 8. I was afraid of walking outside for fear of seeing a dog. When I got married my husband and I bought two English Bulldogs and they are my best friends and my children. They’ve also helped me relax a lot around other dogs. I’m still nervous and scared around dogs I don’t know but I am not terrified anymore. I’m so happy you have a pup that is your best friend!

    • I feel you. I was attacked by a pitbull and had a few unfortunate situations involving dogs which resulted in anxiety and fearfulness. Now, since I rescued Bailey, I am much more comfortable around other dogs! Kudos to you – it’s not easy! Xo

  4. We always had cats because we didn’t own our home for a long time. The minute we had a home with a yard, a fence and a mortgage, we had dogs. Currently we have 3; a prim and proper chihuahua mix with a very cute underbite; and two lab mixes that love to chase each other up and down the stairs! Enjoy your furry friend. They are, indeed, family.

  5. I love dogs! I grew up with one and until I moved out of my parents home in November I had never lived without one!
Now I really miss the company and amusement of having a canine companion.
My boyfriend used to be scared of dogs until he got to know mine, now he can’t wait for us to be more settled and get a puppy of our own 😀
    Thanks for sharing!

  6. Hi namaste… I am so glad you write about dogs. I so want one but work and health are a barrier and my parents don’t like the idea too… But someday I am going to get a canine friend.. Dont like the idea of calling him a pet as dogs are more of a friend than humans. We have street dogs in india.. The ones in my locality bark at night when someone suspicious from outside comes to our area.. They are just great… Got to get me one
