The True Gifts of Christmas: Rediscovering the Meaning Behind Our Favorite Traditions

Every December, our family pulls out the boxes of ornaments, the tangled lights, and the cocoa mugs that only appear once a year. It’s joyful and chaotic, a mix of glitter, cookies, and carols, but sometimes, in the rush to make everything magical, I forget why we do it all in the first place.

This year, I wanted to slow things down and help Emilia and Nicholas connect with the meaning behind our Christmas traditions. That’s when I received a new book published by Loyola Press: The True Gifts of Christmas: Unwrapping the Meaning Behind Our Most Cherished Traditions by Megan Alexander.

A Book That Brings Christmas Traditions to Life

In The True Gifts of Christmas, author Megan Alexander takes 25 of our most beloved holiday symbols such as candy canes, stockings, wreaths, Christmas trees, and Santa Claus, and unwraps the stories and symbolism behind each one.

Each chapter explores a single tradition and its deeper purpose, showing how these customs reflect love, generosity, hope, and faith. What I love most is that the book doesn’t feel like a history lesson. It feels like a cozy conversation. You can easily read one story each night with your family leading up to Christmas, making it a gentle and reflective countdown to the big day.

Emilia especially loved learning that the candy cane’s shape and colors have special meanings, while Nicholas was thrilled to “hunt” for candy canes around the house afterward. Every chapter gives you a simple way to bring the message to life, whether it’s crafting, baking, or performing a small act of kindness.

Why This Book Belongs in Every Family’s Holiday Season

The True Gifts of Christmas is a beautiful reset from the holiday rush. Between shopping lists, parties, and school events, it’s easy to feel like the season races by, but this book helps families pause, even for just 10 minutes, to focus on connection over consumption. The writing is warm and accessible, making it easy to adapt for all ages. Emilia can understand the reflections, while Nicholas enjoys the hands-on activities that follow.

How We’re Bringing It to Life

Here’s a glimpse of our upcoming holiday lineup inspired by The True Gifts of Christmas:

🎄 The Christmas Tree – We’ll decorate while talking about how the evergreen reminds us of the everlasting love of God. Emilia will share one “gift” she wants to give that isn’t wrapped, like kindness or patience.

🍬 Candy Canes – We’ll do a candy cane scavenger hunt for Nicholas and end with cocoa while reading the story behind its red and white stripes.

🎁 Stockings and Giving – Each of us will pick a person to surprise with a small act of giving, such as a note, a treat, or a handmade craft.

🌟 Nativity Scene – On Christmas Eve, we’ll reflect on what the true gifts of Christmas have been for our family this year.

🎅 Advent Calendars – I got the kids this Magna-Tiles Advent Calendar for a fun Christmas countdown.

The True Gifts of Christmas isn’t just a great addition to your family bookshelf. It’s a meaningful gift for teachers, grandparents, or friends who love the season but crave something deeper than glitter and wrapping paper.

Closing Thoughts

If you’ve ever wished Christmas could feel just a little slower and a little more intentional, The True Gifts of Christmas is the perfect place to start. It’s not about doing more; it’s about remembering why we celebrate in the first place.

This year, our family is choosing to unwrap not just the presents under the tree, but the true gifts that have been there all along: love, gratitude, and togetherness.

Celebrate Compassion, Courage, and Praise — Two Beautiful New Children’s Books + a Giveaway!

As a mom and pediatric occupational therapist, I’m always drawn to books that encourage kindness, spark meaningful conversations, and help kids embrace who they are. Today, I’m thrilled to spotlight two heart-filled children’s books that do just that: Every Day Is a Holiday by Greg Kincaid and Fiona and the Peculiar Praise by Rennie Dyball. These stories shine in their own unique ways—but both remind us of the power of love, empathy, and being true to ourselves.

And the best part? I’m giving away 3 copies of Fiona and the Peculiar Praise over on Instagram! Keep reading for details.

Every Day Is a Holiday by Greg Kincaid

This heartwarming tale introduces us to Allie McCray, a sweet six-year-old who discovers an abandoned puppy on the doorstep of her local animal shelter. As she searches for the perfect name for the playful pup, young readers are taken on a thoughtful journey full of love, joy, and meaningful moments.

Every Day Is a Holiday celebrates the beautiful bonds we form with the animals we adopt into our families. It’s also a gentle reminder of the importance of compassion, kindness, and taking time to celebrate life’s everyday moments. With rich illustrations and accessible language, this book is ideal for early readers and perfect for bedtime snuggles or classroom discussions about empathy and animal care.

Emilia has such a strong bond with our rescue dog, Gino. Reading Every Day Is a Holiday opened up a meaningful conversation about his adoption story—how we found him, how we came up with his name, and what it means to adopt rather than shop.

It was one of those moments where a book sparked something deeper. We talked about the importance of giving animals a second chance, the joy they bring into our lives, and the responsibility that comes with being a pet owner.

Not long after, Emilia was chosen to be a “book reviewer” at school. Without hesitation, she selected Every Day Is a Holiday and gave it an enthusiastic 10 out of 5 stars. I think that says it all.

This book didn’t just entertain—it connected to her heart, and ours.

Fiona and the Peculiar Praise by Rennie Dyball

Meet Fiona, affectionately known as Queen Fiona of Apartment 4C. She’s not just a pretty face; Fiona is clever, brave, and incredibly helpful. Yet, despite her many accomplishments, like catching a rogue mouse, and entertaining the family, she finds that everyone only comments on her appearance. Frustrated by the lack of recognition for her noble deeds, Fiona longs for appreciation of her true, intrinsic qualities.

Through Fiona’s humorous and relatable experiences, this charming picture book delivers an important message: it’s what’s on the inside that truly counts. Illustrated by Maine Diaz, children aged 5 to 8 will enjoy Fiona’s playful adventure with a very important lesson.

Emilia loves Fiona and the Peculiar Praise because she sees a little bit of herself in Fiona—someone who works hard, helps others, and wants to be noticed for more than just how she looks with her beautiful blonde hair and blue eyes. She found Fiona’s adventures funny and exciting, especially the part about catching the mouse, but what really stood out to her was how Fiona wanted people to recognize her kindness and cleverness. After we finished reading, Emilia said, “Fiona is more than cute—she’s smart and helpful.” This book helped her understand that true praise comes from who you are on the inside, not just what people see on the outside.

It opened up great discussions on the kind of compliments we give and receive—how it’s easy to focus on appearance, but much more meaningful to recognize qualities like kindness, bravery, and helpfulness. Emilia and I talked about times when she felt proud of something she did, and how good it feels when someone notices those efforts. We also talked about how she can complement her friends in ways that make them feel seen and valued for who they are, not just how they look.

Celebrate Women’s History Month with Life Clues by Angela Santomero

As most of you know, March is Women’s History Month. I am blessed to share Life Clues by Author Angela Santomero, the genius behind children’s shows Blue’s Clues and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. (If you have been following me for a while, you know that both of my kids love Daniel Tiger.) Angela’s latest book, Life Clues, offers insights that resonate with women of all ages. As a working mom of two little kids, I was able to read Life Clues twice, leaving the book with dog-eared pages and a journal filled with all of my thoughts.

The Child’s Mind

Angela Santomero draws inspiration from the innocent, yet intelligent minds of children. In Life Clues, she shares twenty clues that can transform our lives. These clues, often hidden in the chaos of daily life, hold the keys to an exceptional life. Some of my favorite clues are Don’t Say Fun, Be Fun, Create Your Own Neighborhood, and Always Say Goodbye. (I can relate to all of them, but felt myself relating to these three the most.)

Navigating Challenges

Are you up for the challenge? Women have always been adept at navigating challenges. As many of us juggle work, family, and household tasks, we have become multi-taskers and great leaders. Angela encourages us to embrace challenges intentionally. Each challenge carries a clue, which points us toward a greater purpose.

Mindfulness and Playfulness

Life Clues includes the important concepts of mindfulness and playfulness. As women, we often forget to play and find joy in the little things. A lot of us, including myself, forget about self-care. I admit, I don’t practice self-care as much as I should. It should be a priority, but, admittedly, it usually falls to the bottom of the list. Life Clues reminds readers to dance, laugh, and explore with childlike wonder. Stopping and being present, not only with ourselves but with our children, is so important. It is truly about presence; stopping and smelling the roses, sipping the coffee slowly, making time for a therapeutic massage, feeling your baby’s touch as you snuggle under a blanket, and hearing the belly laughs during playtime. Life Clues has reminded me to slow down and be more mindful and playful with my children.

Create A Satisfying Life

Life Clues is an easy, quick read that shares bite-sized life lessons that are accessible even to the busiest readers. Trust me, if I could finish Life Clues two times, with a crazy schedule, so can you, friends. Life Clues has been a great reminder to discover my passions, journal what makes me truly happy, and think more positively. Everyone deserves a fulfilling, satisfying life.

LippyClip Review

Sponsored post containing affiliate links. All opinions within are my own.

I used to struggle to find chapsticks in my purse as I often carry around way too many things. Now our family has the LippyClip!

Em sporting the Pink Leopard LippyClip

LippyClip is designed to perfectly hold standard-sized lip balm, such as Chapstick, Blistex, standard-sized Burt’s Bees, Carmex, etc.  Some squeeze-type lip balms will also fit, as well as any 0.15 oz lip balm. LippyClip was invented in 2012 by founder and CEO, Amy Gabriel. All LippyClips are made in the USA, by women working from home. We are a 100% women-owned and operated business. As you know, Realm of Vibes prides itself in working with women-owned, small businesses, so please check them out and refer to your friends and family!

Also offered is LippyClipKISS, which is a larger version to carry around bigger lip balms and essential oil rollers.

LippyClips are great gifts! They come ready to be wrapped or added to cellophane or a bag!

One of the best features of LippyClip is that there are so many solids & patterns to choose from! New products are released on Fridays. (Make sure to follow LippyClip on Instagram and Facebook.)

You can also shop sets of LippyClip, LippyClipKISS, and SaniClips. The SaniClip is perfectly designed to hold hand sanitizer. SaniClips are most commonly used on purse hardware and backpack pulls. However, every day we see new ways our customers choose to use the SaniClip, such as diaper bags, children’s backpacks, strollers, gym bags, belt loops, and more. Working in healthcare, and having small children, I always have my hand sanitzer with me and putting it in the SaniClip keeps it handy! (I also have one on my diaper bag!)

I have given teachers, therapists, co-workers, friends, and family LippyClips for birthdays, holidays, and gifts. As a winter gift, I got Em’s bus driver a LippyClip with buses on it, a Chapstick, and scratch-off lottery tickets in a cellophane bag.

LippyClip keeps your essentials nearby; I hook my LippyClip into my purse and I can always find it, especially in times when I need my chapstick most during the dry NJ winter months.

Do you have a LippyClip? Which pattern or solid would you pick? Who would you gift one to? Let me know in the comments!
