Flavored Kale Chips

I love kale. I always purchase kale for my salads and smoothies, so I decided it would be more cost effective to grow kale in my garden this year. I also found that it was very difficult to find a bag of kale chips without artificial flavors and preservatives. Kale chips could also be quite expensive, so I started making flavored kale chips at home. It took a few some experimenting to come up with the perfect recipe.

Shopping List

  • Fresh kale, cleaned and cut into bite-size pieces.
  • Flavored olive oil (I used cilantro & roasted garlic.)
  • Flavored salt (I used garlic.)
  • Side note: Get creative. Add crushed red pepper, minced ginger, black salt, etc.

Olive Oil and Garlic Salt

Directions

  • Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Line baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Spread one layer of kale onto a baking sheet.
  • Drizzle olive oil over kale. Make sure each leaf has olive oil on it.
  • Sprinkle with salt.
  • Cook in the oven for 12-15 minutes. Watch kale closely. If you overcook, it will taste bitter and burnt. If you don’t cook it long enough, it will not be crunchy and will be slick with olive oil.

Kale on Baking Sheet

The final result…

Kale Chips

Crunchy, yummy, healthy kale chips with a nice flavor of cilantro, onion, and garlic.

Do you like kale? Have you ever made kale chips?

Kale chips are yummy, I’ve always burned them when I make them though. This looks great, I’ll have to give it a try.

You really have to watch them closely. It took me many attempts to finally find the right time frame with my oven.

I’m trying to eat healthier and I was thinking of buying kale chips, but you are right, they are expensive. These look like a yummy, more budget-conscious choice!

Not only are they expensive but even the “healthy” ones I found still have preservatives in them. Gross! I don’t want preservatives in my food!

Unlike you, I don’t love kale. But, maybe I would like it prepared this way! Olive oil makes everything better (I love olive oil), and it’s healthy! I’ll have to try this sometime.

And FLAVORED olive oil is even better. Nothing hurts a failure but a try!

I would probably love to eat these, but it makes my house smell like dead fish. Maybe I could sage after and not worry about it? Hehehe

Have added all those ingredients to next week’s shopping list! And will have to wait until the boys go to bed to make it so that they aren’t distracting me while it’s in the oven!
