I love my smile. And, I don’t hate the dentist because I know that good dental care begins at home. Besides using doTERRA’s On Guard toothpaste, I rinse with mouthwash and floss one to two times a day. Since I became a doTERRA Wellness Advocate, I have been experimenting with creating my own self-care products.

Let me ask you: have you read the label to your mouthwash bottle lately? My mouthwash bottle contained a bright green solution with indecipherable words except Yellow 5 and Blue 1. Why am I using this?, I thought.

So, I decided to make my own, all-natural mouthwash.

What you Need

All-Natural Mouthwash

Directions

  • Add 1 cup of distilled or purified water to the glass bottle.
  • Add 1/2 teaspoon of Fractionated Coconut Oil
    • Coconut oil has antibacterial, antifungal properties.
    • I love the way coconut oil lines my teeth during oil pulling, and I feel that it helps protect my teeth in my mouthwash.
  • Add 1/4 teaspoon of Sea Salt
    • Salt has soothing properties and can help whiten your teeth.
  • Add 20 drops of doTERRA essential oil
    • Get creative! I used Peppermint & On-Guard but you could use tea tree oil, cinnamon, lemon, wild orange, clove, or myrrh. Find what works for you.
  • Close and shake the bottle vigorously.
  • Open the bottle, take a swig and swish/gargle for 30 seconds. Spit it out in the sink.
  • Feel good about using an all-natural mouthwash.

Note: Some people add baking soda for extra cleansing and whitening. Sometimes I add 1/4-1/2 teaspoon, sometimes I don’t.

Where to get your doTERRA Essential Oils

doTERRA has Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade oils, which means there are no impurities in the bottle. A bottle of lavender contains lavender. A bottle of lemon contains lemon. Nothing more, nothing less. All of doTERRA’s products are responsibly and ethically sourced from countries around the world.

I would love to help you get started with doTERRA.

That’s a very smart way to use essential oil. Homemade all-natural personal care items are the best. I will try this myself. Thanks.

I like the idea that this is totally organic. The regular store-bought mouthwash, like you said, contains… Who knows what! Good info, thank you!

I am pinning this to use when I have run out of the regular stuff. I don’t use mouthwash too often so it takes ages to use it up. I love how simple this recipe is and knowing that it doesn’t contain any nasties!

    1. realmofvibes Avatar

Maybe my recipe will get you on the mouth wash train! Lmao! I put it in a small glass bottle so the recipe remains “fresh.” I hope you give it a try and let me know your thoughts. Thank you for reading and commenting.

  17. Adrienne Avatar

I don’t know much about essential oils, so this post is very educational for me. What is “oil pulling?”

  18. sunshineandkiddos Avatar

This makes total sense, I love going natural and certainly am not fond of all the things I can’t pronounce in my daily products! I will surely try this when I have the money to spend! Thank you for sharing!!!

I’m a doTERRA Wellness Advocate too! Good stuff. I’m a big believer in making things at home instead of using chemical filled drug store brands. Your mouthwash recipe can help people easily start switching over to more natural products.

    1. realmofvibes Avatar

That’s awesome. Being a WA is great, isn’t it? I hope it inspires others to make healthier, cost effective decisions!

  25. Melly Avatar

I’m a Dentist and I am interested in this recipe, will be giving it a try. I agree, I don’t like the artificial ingredients of big brand mouth washes. However, mouth wash is just perfume. The most important part of oral hygiene is in the brushing and flossing, so great job with your daily habits! Thanks for sharing.

    1. realmofvibes Avatar

Thanks Melly! I think the coconut oil, salt, and baking soda really does help keep my teeth whiter and breath smelling fresh. Thanks for reading!

Thanks for providing such a natural solution! I haven’t looked at the ingredient list of my mouthwash but I’m sure the fact that it burns my mouth isn’t a good sign!

  28. lucicoo Avatar

I’ll have to give this a go one day when I run out of my mouthwash. I also look for a natural alternative.
