For Realm of Vibes
Great Wolf Lodge is the best family vacation for making memories because the kids don’t just leave with souvenirs; they leave with stories they can’t wait to share with their friends and teachers. Here is why Great Wolf Lodge sticks in their memories so strongly.
When my son, Nicholas, told his preschool teacher that he lives at Great Wolf Lodge, I knew it had officially earned its spot as one of our favorite family destinations.
For our family of four, with Emilia (7.5) and Nicholas (4.5), it is the one trip they talk about long after we’ve unpacked the suitcases. We have visited both the Perryville, Maryland and the Poconos locations across different seasons, and the magic is consistent every time.
Great Wolf Lodge Resort is More Than Just a Waterpark: The Full Experience Summary
What sets Great Wolf Lodge apart from other family trips is the sheer volume of “core memories” packed into one property. There’s so much to do in one place and it eliminates the need to spend time in the car driving or waiting in long lines. It isn’t just about the water; it’s about the atmosphere from the moment you walk through the doors.
For our kids, the top highlights include:
- The Arrival: That first burst of excitement seeing the themed forest lodge. We opt for the KidCabin Suite with a balcony, so the kids love sleeping in bunk beds and hanging on the balcony for a little fresh air between activities. There are numerous ways to upgrade your room experience at Great Wolf Lodge.
- The Waterpark: Our kids never tire of the wave pool, the slides, and the lazy river. Since Nick is currently taking swim lessons, we really appreciate that Great Wolf Lodge has life jackets of all sizes readily available throughout the park. It provides that extra peace of mind, especially knowing the lifeguards are so attentive and proactive in keeping every swimmer safe while they explore.
- The Late-Night Energy: Ending the day at the Hustle & Howl Dance Party.
- The Extras: Great Wolf Lodge offers so many included activities with the option to upgrade your experience with PawPasses. Activities like MagiQuest, mini-golf, bowling, Build-a-Bear, and the ropes course keep the momentum going. One of our mandatory traditions is visiting the Great Wolf Candy Company. The kids’ eyes light up the second they walk into the gift shop; picking out their own candy is a core memory in itself. Beyond the waterpark, we truly appreciated the variety of lodge activities available. We especially loved the arts and crafts classes, which offered a perfect, creative change of pace. Seeing the characters roaming the lodge adds that extra layer of magic, making the entire environment feel like a living storybook for the kids. From the themed rooms to the hands-on crafts, every detail contributes to the excitement.
- The Treats: Pizza and special drinks in the cabana are always a staple of our trip! Family cabanas are one of those special upgrades that enhance your family experience and help to build special memories.

The Magic of the Outdoor Pool
While the indoor waterpark is the main attraction, the outdoor pool area is a sleeper hit during the warmer months. It feels like a “vacation within a vacation.” Check your location for the included outdoor amenities.
Emilia and Nicholas still talk about the simple joy of splashing between the indoor and outdoor areas. Lounging in the cabana while feeling like we are at a luxury resort adds a layer of relaxation we didn’t expect to find at a waterpark.
The Great Wolf Lodge Nightly Dance Party: A Core Memory High
The evening family dance party in the lobby is arguably the most memorable nightly activity. Great Wolf Lodge describes it as a “last hurrah” for families, and it truly delivers.
Why it’s a highlight every time:
- The combination of glow sticks, bubbles, and upbeat music.
- The “staying up late on vacation” feeling that kids crave.
- Seeing pure joy before they finally retire to their bunk bed suite.
Great Wolf Lodge Activities That Grow With Your Kids
One of the best parts about Great Wolf Lodge is that the experience shifts as the kids grow. Kids of all ages enjoy Great Wolf Lodge. Every stay feels different depending on what they are developmentally ready for.
- Water Slides: Moving from the toddler splashes to the “brave” big-kid slides. Emilia and I love Mountain Edge Raceway which is a toboggan-style racing slide where riders lie on mats head-first, plunging down a four-story drop through twists, turns, and sometimes dark, translucent sections, designed for racing friends and family.
- Bowling: This was a huge hit for Nicholas this year; he loved knocking down all of the pins!
- Mini-golf: Nicholas also took his mini-golf very seriously this year; there is something about a kid-sized putter that makes them feel like a total pro. It has become one of those ‘must-do’ traditions where the kids remember the holes-in-one just as much as the big slides.
- MagiQuest: Exploring the lodge with a magic wand turns the hallways into an adventure.
The “Cabana Life” Upgrade
If you are looking to take memory-making to the next level, I highly recommend renting a cabana. It changes the entire pace of the day by providing a dedicated home base. It allows the kids to go hard on the slides and then come back to a quiet spot to regroup and snack, making the whole day feel much more relaxed.
Final Thoughts: Is It Worth It?
If your goal is a trip where your kids leave with lasting memories, Great Wolf Lodge delivers. It isn’t about one perfect moment; it’s about dozens of small, joyful experiences stacked together. It has become a permanent part of our children’s childhood story and we can’t wait to go back!
